South of Scotland Restaurants
|
Historically referred to simply as the Borders in relation to the proximity to England, the South of Scotland is comprised of the regions of Dumfries and Galloway in the West and Scottish Borders to the East. The least populated area of the country, the south is characterised by a range of hills known as the Southern Uplands, providing a beautiful setting for the towns and villages, among which are some excellent restaurants.

As an area which caters for great visitor numbers keen to enjoy the myriad of outdoor activities and many historical sights which detail the bygone battles between Scotland and England, restaurants in the south of Scotland are well established in meeting the high standards demanded from national and international visitors. They will also likely express a fair bit of local flavour in the design of the restaurant and in the menus.
The great historical buildings host some of the best restaurants in the area, some associated with hotels and others converted from existing buildings designed for some other purpose. These will almost certainly have a classic appeal and elegance which form the perfect backdrop to romantic dinners and special dining celebrations. Many are situated within the heart of the major towns and others make full use of the wonderful countryside in the form of classic roadside coaching inns, manor houses and lodges. Many of these traditional countryside inns and hotels are family oriented and may have children’s play areas and menus, and often also outdoor seating.
While traditional Scottish dishes and menus are certainly popular, there is a whole diversity of culinary expression in the Borders, with Chinese and Indian restaurants being perennial favourites. Other restaurants with international or cosmopolitan menus featuring the best of Italian or French cuisine are also common. You will find the ideal south of Scotland restaurant listed here, whatever your tastes.
