Highlands and Islands Restaurants

The most northern reaches of Scotland offer up some of the most dramatic scenery imaginable, from stunning island beaches to mountains, cliffs and enormous areas of unspoilt land. Incorporating beautiful islands as far south as Arran, to the Hebrides and up to Orkney and Shetland, tourism is unsurprisingly a major economic force in the region. Inland attractions such as Loch Ness and the big skies of Caithness play a major role too and where there is fine highland hospitality to be had there are great restaurants in which to dine.

The city of Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and is home to much of the economic, political, and cultural interests of the region. A lively city with a contemporary outlook, there are many restaurants with a cosmopolitan feel and many others which make the most of the rich history and culture of the area through superb dining environments and menus which reflect the availability of fresh local produce.

Scottish cuisine is very much celebrated in the Highlands and Islands, from the great fish and seafood restaurants found along the endless miles of coastline to the locally sourced meat and dairy products used by chefs in the finest restaurants and hotels. As a result there will be opportunities to sample some Scottish favourites such as venison, haggis and smoked fish. In the larger towns there will be many other options too of course, representing a whole world of cuisines and dining styles. Expect to see great Indian restaurants, Chinese, Italian and many other international favourites.

The Highlands and Islands is one of the least populated areas in Europe and with an abundance and variety of land to explore, expect some culinary gems set against stunning backdrops. There are many such country hotels and inns in the region and they serve up delicious food with no little flair.
